“B&B Al Mulino”, which takes its name from the remains of an old mill (“mulino”) on which the building was constructed, is continuously being renewed and reserves for its customers the possibility to admire, close up, the perpetual motion of an original cast iron wheel 5 metres in diameter. It is moved by the water flow of the Naviglio Grande Bresciano canal that laps against the property, and that is also clearly visible from the Brescia-Salò cycling path along the edge of the Naviglio canal on the side opposite the B&B that offers visitors the enjoyment of splendid landscapes on foot or riding a bicycle.
Sirmione with its thermal baths is 20 km from Desenzano del Garda and just a few more kilometres down the road is Castelnuovo del Garda, which is home to the famous “Gardaland” amusement park, a realm of entertainment for both children and adults.
For those who love nature outings, the “Cariadeghe Plateau Nature Monument” is about two kilometres from the B&B in the municipality of Serle. It is called the “Brescia karst” precisely owing to the presence of important karstic phenomena distinguished by dolines that act as natural funnels that convey rainwater into the subsoil, swallow-holes and caves, many of which were used for a long time as “milk holes”, above all to preserve dairy products, since they are able to keep a constant internal temperature all year long.
The apt geographical position at the entrance to Val Sabbia, along popular routes connecting both valleys with the plain and Brixia with Verona, certainly played a fundamental role in the decision to build a large residential and production complex here in the early Imperial age. It was, indeed, located along infrastructures linking to the large hubs, particularly to the probable branching of the ancient Via Gallica, a secondary artery that connected Brixia with Val Sabbia and Lake Garda. Proof of its importance lies in Constantine’s milepost found in Nuvolento, in the Pieve area, and the one of Constantine and sons in Bottenago, both tangible confirmations of the care the emperors gave to keeping the road network connecting the Brescia colony with the other Northern Italy towns efficient.
Comune di NuvolentoThe current Romanesque complex is formed by the bell tower and by the ecclesiastical building with a rectangular plan and only one semi-circular apse to the east, a single gabled façade to the west and roofed with pantiles. The dedication to Saint Stephanie would seem to be a popular distortion coming from a particular feast celebrated in Nuvolento ever since ancient times, also with the participation of the residents of the nearby municipalities: the 2nd of August, today feast of “Perdon d’Assisi”, which is dedicated to Saint Stephen I Pope and Martyr on the liturgical calendar. Scholars ascribe to this date a feast linked to the probable consecration of the church that the Nuvolento residents have continued to commemorate by extending the celebrations - “the festival” - also to the day after, the 3rd of August, corresponding to Saint Stephen Protomartyr. This is what supposedly gave rise to the name “Stephanie” ("Stefanía"), to indicate the two days dedicated to the Saints Stephen. In the medieval times, the fortunes and events of the Nuvolento parish church were directly linked to the lot of the nearby and powerful monastery S. Pietro al Monte Ursino di Serle (founded in the 11th century and flourishing institution of the central centuries of the Middle Ages): “it is certain that the monastery held supremacy over the parish church in the 11th and 12th centuries[1]”. It was only later that the parish church was to become detached and to become an independent institution. Even though the first archpriest was remembered already in 1130, total autonomy was probably reached only a few centuries later.
